Our Approach Seven projects, including workshops in sculpture, mural, dance, creative writing and photography, are part of the Northern Rivers ArtStart program. Performance and visual art projects have been designed to encourage participation from young people with disabilities.

As we see it - A youth view of Byron

About this Project?
The project will see the creation of a professionally published book of art, photography and written expression.  All contributions will be made by the youth participants and guides by local artists, professionals, community mentors and trained staff. The entire process will be documented on video, which will then screened at the offical book launch. Youth participants will be involved in all levels of the project - from attracting fundraising, creating, compiling and editing the contributions and publicity, promotions and marketing of the launch.

Biala Special School Mural

About this Project?
The aim of this project is to promote sensory skills through tactile and visual stimuli for young students with disabilities attending the Biala Special School. The school mural, located off the Sensory Room, is designed and created by the students under the guidance of professionals and depicts their lives in the Ballina Shire.

Crank It Up

About this Project?
Crank It Up focuses on delivering workshops in Hip Hop Dance and MCing in Casino in the lead up to Crankfest Xtreme - the region's biggest Hip Hop festival. The workshops will aim to increase participation by local youth in the event which features a big dance comp and MC competition.

Kyogle Girls Rap on Climate

About this Project?
A group of regional Kyogle high school girls will lead their peers in the exciting youth arts process of writing and recording their own rap song. The subject: climate change. The means: by engaging the skills of innovative and experience young rapper, recording artists and record-label producer -Karuna Bajracharya.

Lantern Making Workshop

About this Project?
This project is designed to encourage and upskill a small team of disadvantaged young people in the delivery of a creative arts workshop on lantern making to a larger group of young people. It will provide real world vocational experience including a financial consideration, whilst being supported and mentored by an experienced adult team from the Links to Learning Youth Start Program. It will also have the potential to establish a lantern making structure at the New School of Arts Community Art Workshop which will stimulate further youth arts and cultural activities.

Showboat of Dreams

About this Project?
Showboat of Dreams consists of 6 dressed rehearsals and a 2-hour performance that showcases skills development of individuals and groups of young adults with disabilities. Participants have chosen a showboat theme. Skills developed in the workshops include: songwriting, band, composition, drumming, interactive sound, choir, drama, character development, script writing, costume design, visual arts, prop design and promotional material design.

Tsunami Origami

About this Project?
Tsunami Origami is a visual arts and sculpture project involving young people with disabilities. As a skills based project, participants were involved with the planning, designing and implementing the project to exhibition stage. Young people  developed a theme for their work and  explored a number of artistic techniques including painting, inks, stenciling, oil pastels, charcoal and sponging.  Designs were applied to large squares of paper which the group folded into giant origmi sculptures. These sculptures
were placed on exhibition at the Grafton Regional Gallery and will be also go on exhibition at Clarence Valley Regional Libraries as part of the Outreach Exhibitions Program.
