Project Organisation:
Moorambilla Festival Committee
Location:
COONAMBLE
Facilitators and Artists:
Kate McCarthy - Mural Atst & facilitator
About this Project?
Permission has been sought and granted by the Coonamble shire council for the use of the Coonamble swimming pool building to be muraled on both sides this year by young women from the Coonamble shire community in the two weeks prior to the Moorambilla festival in Coonamble. This year Moorambilla’ artistic focus is on encouraging women and girls to sing and actively participate in music making within their community. Using the thematic ideas developed in 2006 and the logo created for the festival, artist Kate Mc Cathy plans to extend the techniques she used to mural the inaugural wall in 2006 by creating an artwork that utilises stencilling techniques and painting / spray painting with girls from ages 12 – 24 in the Community. It is anticipated that in the two weeks prior to the festival (and two weekends) girls fromYr 7 – Yr 12 at Coonamble high school, and those girls in the age group ( 12 – 24) within the wider community either working within the mainstream community, St Vincent’s De Paul, in work schemes, or at Tafe will sign on for a 2 hour session with the artist to work collaboratively in small groups on developing and executing their visual ideas. It is anticipated that each participant will complete at least one session during the “life” of this project, and will be encouraged to use their digital photographic skills to document their progress and seek further artistic inspiration from this aspect, if they possess these skills. It is hoped that these candidates, with help will eventually be able to post these images on the Moorambilla festival website and other websites as appropriate. Participants will be encouraged to design, conduct and implement their visual ideas for the mural as an integral part of this year’s festival. If appropriate, smaller sub groups will be asked to undertake areas of responsibility including publicity, promotions, advertising, and raising community awareness of this aspect of the festival.
